Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus sat down in conversation with his disciples. Part of that conversation centered on an important and challenging question, “Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?” This question still puzzles many today, but Peter and the disciples confess, “Thou are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (cf. Matthew 16:16). Jesus went on to say, “Upon this rock [the confession of Christ’s person and work] I will building my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (cf. Matthew
16:18)
Many church organizations celebrating decades and centuries of history that started with a particular
founder or pastor and highlights his accomplishments and patrilineal heritage. It is not so with the
Faith Believing Church of God. We celebrate over 2,000 years of history because we are simply a small
part of the global body of Christ which has existed and prevailed since Christ hung his head and died and
the veil in the temple was torn.
That day, at Calvary, when the veil was torn, Christ provided access to the Father for all who would
come to him by faith.
“For He is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition
between us; having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandment contained in
ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; and that he might
reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: and came and
preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. For through him we both
have access by one Spirit unto the Father.” Ephesians 2:13-18
Jesus, the Cornerstone of the church, established a global body which will never experience defeat so
long its foundation remains steadfast and it mission is true to course. In Him, “there is neither Greek
nor Jew [racial distinctions], circumcision nor uncircumcision [religious sects], Barbarian, Scythian bond
nor free [socioeconomic classes]: but Christ is all, and in all” (cf. Colossians 3:11). As such, we endeavor
to be a portion of the body of Christ that is representative of the whole.
We are not an African American, Anglosaxon, Latino church rooted in or celebrating our culture. We are
not a family owned and operated business celebrating our connections to past generations. We are a
small segment of the body of Christ, intentionally choosing to love all Christians everywhere, regardless
of their denomination, and celebrating the rich history we have – “that Christ, died for our sins
according to the Scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to
the Scriptures” (cf. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4). That founding message has remained constant throughout the
Apostolic era, the Byzantine era, the Reformation, and even into modern society – Christ died to
reconcile lost sinners to a Holy God.
This is the history of the church and we are elated to share in it.
